A senior Iranian commander has reportedly been killed in an Israeli airstrike in Damascus, Syria.

Mohammad Reza Zahedi, Iran's top general in the IRGC's Quds Force, was killed along with his lieutenants and several other high-ranking officials, according to Reuters.

The Iranian Consulate was reportedly destroyed in an airstrike.

The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which acts as Iran's proxy in Syria and the surrounding region, has vowed revenge.

“This crime will not end without punishment and retribution for the enemy,” Hezbollah said.

Reuters reported:

Suspected Israeli warplanes bombed Iran's embassy in Syria on Monday, killing seven of its military advisers including three senior commanders, Iran said, and marking a major escalation in Israel's war with its regional rivals.

Reuters correspondents at the site in the Mezeh district of Damascus saw emergency workers climbing over the debris of a destroyed building inside the diplomatic compound adjacent to the main Iranian embassy building. Emergency vehicles were parked outside. An Iranian flag was hanging from a pole near the wreckage.

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, seen at the scene with the Syrian interior minister, said, “We strongly condemn this brutal terrorist attack, which targeted the Iranian Consulate building in Damascus and killed many innocent people.”
