“They knew those schools were the lifeline for those kids…and they closed it down anyway,” TV personality and psychologist Phil McGraw, more commonly known as Dr. Phil, told Jordan Peterson. Expressed his condolences on the podcast.

He said, “You (CDC and the Department of Education) had information that these children were not as vulnerable to this disease as everyone else. You knew they were in a mental health crisis. You knew it was their lifeline, and you pulled it out from under them, and you knew very well what you were doing when you did it.

Dr. Phil argues that the government agencies mentioned knew that it was necessary for schools to remain open to protect children from abusers at home because teachers, bus drivers, coaches, etc. were important in identifying signs of child abuse .

“They shut all that down,” the psychologist demurred. “And when they did that, those (child abuse) referrals dropped by 40% to 50% in some major markets. And these children were sent home, behind closed doors, with the same abusers. It's not like abuse went down 40% or 50%. This probably grew out of the frustration of being locked in the house behind those doors. And they closed schools without making any plan to bring them back.”

“And so, you ask questions about it,” Dr. Phil continued, “and they say, 'Well, we did the best we could with what we knew at the time.' No, you didn't do your best with what you knew at the time.”

Dr. Phil's anguish over school closures during COVID-19 is clear as he reflects on the deeply negative impact these decisions have on children's well-being and safety. He sharply criticized the CDC and the Department of Education for their actions, suggesting that these agencies had clear evidence that children were at low risk from COVID-19, but they ignored the data and ignored children. Allowed to suffer anyway.

An analysis by the Institute of Economic Affairs criticized the lockdowns, suggesting that they were a costly failure – and that they were not needed. As the study points out, the broader impacts of lockdowns include not only economic and social costs, but also specific damage to children's education and mental health, which calls for a more balanced approach to managing public health crises. Throws light on the need.
