Hector might not believe it, but he's one of the lucky ones.
The 18-year-old Mexican national was abandoned in the desert by smugglers, who paid him about $3,000 to take him across the southern border and into the United States. When he reached his destination — Indianapolis, where he said his father worked as a roofer — he had to give them another $3,000.
Due to a condition that was causing his muscles to deteriorate from overuse, Hector could not keep up with the rest of the group. The smugglers had already received half of the $6,000 fee, but apparently they didn't care.
The other 10 or so people in his group moved on, and took him to what NewsNation described as “the desolate area of Texas”: Terrell County, population 760, or about one person for every three square miles of land. Left for.
Hector, whose last name was not reported, found a cattleman's RV and stayed there for two days. Eventually, he made a flag using a pillow and a pipe to attract attention and found a game camera, in which he showed his Mexican passport.
Terrell County Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland saw this and set out to find the young man. NewsNation's Ali Bradley was with him when he did so.
“I want to go home to my mom,” a visibly upset Hector told the sheriff in Spanish, crying. “They left me in those hills and I went to the farm to look for help.”
Cleveland tells Bradley he's never seen a person as bad as Hector – and he's been patrolling the border in some capacity for 26 years, with the Border Patrol and then as sheriff.
Hector said he fled Mexico because he was pressured into working for a drug cartel.
“They threatened me in Tehuacan if I didn't work for the Narcos, because I was indebted to them,” he said. “So I focused on getting out of Tehuacan as quickly as possible.”
Cleveland took Hector to the hospital for treatment. After that, he went home to Mexico and an uncertain future.

Nonetheless, Hector must be thought of one of many fortunate ones, and never simply because he has a household to stay with in Mexico.
