Tonight marks the premiere of the final season of the beloved television show “Blue Bloods,” which has been running on CBS since 2010. In preparation for it, “Blue Bloods” star Donnie Wahlberg is opening up about the strong bond they share. With her co-star Tom Selleck, who has become a father figure to her both on and off screen.
Wahlberg's bond with Selleck
“Tom Selleck, I call him dad,” Wahlberg, 54, told Fox News. “At first he was a little bothered by it for the first season or two, he was like, 'Oh, hey, Donnie.' Now it feels like we have become very close.”
“He's literally like, 'Oh, hey, son, how are you today?'” he continued. “It feels like we've become a real family, and not having (them) together anymore is going to be a lot, but I'm sure we'll stay connected even after the cameras are off.”
Wahlberg described what it was like working on the show with an “icon” like Selleck, who rose to fame starring in “Magnum PI” in the 1980s.
“Tom, you know, in many ways, he's an icon. First of all, you know, when you think about television and how many people have had two series – two TV series – come up with this level of success, Tea“There have been very few people in television history who have had two long-running, majorly successful television shows,” Wahlberg explained. “You can probably count them on fingers, and Tom Selleck is one of them.”
The 'Blue Bloods' cast has become 'a real family'
Wahlberg also said that the rest of the “Blue Bloods” cast has become “a real family” after filming together for fourteen years.
Wahlberg said, “The cast and crew – there's something about coming to work every day in New York with this crew that we have, many of whom have been here for a full 14 years.” “He is incredible to work with. The actors are amazing. They are like a real family.”
The cast and crew have become so close that Wahlberg has a hard time imagining not filming with them anymore.
He admitted, “We've been together so long that the idea of not working with people I've worked with for so long is going to hit me in the heart at some point soon.” “I'm really enjoying the trip right now and trying not to get too carried away emotionally.”

Selleck not ready to say goodbye to 'Blue Bloods'
Last month, Selleck explained how difficult it was for him to see “Blue Bloods” ending.
“CBS will know that a lot of people aren't ready to say goodbye to it,” the 79-year-old star told TV Insider. “The show is more popular than ever, and I think (numbers) will grow with the interest this year. We're certainly not out of ideas.”
“I'm not counting the days so I can do something else. I like the work,” he added. “Sometimes the hours are a little tough because I'm older, but so what? I want work as long as I have them.”
Selleck also talked about his iconic “Blue Bloods” character Frank Reagan, saying “He picks fights because he wants someone to take this burden of responsibility off his hands and get him off. But he's got a sense of responsibility. There's a hyperactive feeling and he's sticking to it.”
