Whoopi Goldberg is defending Malia Obama after her first daughter dropped her surname for her directorial debut at the Sundance Film Festival.

The Wrap reported that Malia, 25, recently directed a short film called “The Heart,” but instead of including her last name in the credits, she went “Malia Ann.” During Wednesday's episode of the ABC talk show “The View,” Goldberg was quick to defend Barack and Michelle Obama's daughter from the backlash she has received for removing her famous nickname.
“She knows she's Obama, why do you care?” Goldberg, 68, said, “Why do you care what she calls herself? If she wants to call herself Janet McDonald, she has the right to do so! If I can be Whoopi Goldberg, she can be whatever she wants to be!”
Goldberg's real name is Karin Elaine Johnson, but she decided to change her name to Whoopi Cushion for her stage name early in her career.
“I mean, why do people get excited about things like this? Why are people wasting their time?” Goldberg added.

'The View' co-hosts are gaining weight
While liberal co-host Joy Behar agreed, she also felt there would be nothing wrong with Malia using her last name.

And I can't think of any bigger shadow than the President and First Lady of the United States to realize that you're living in,” Farrah Griffin said, adding that the name change is more acceptable because Malia is something outside of politics.
